High Potential and Gifted Education

Every child has strengths, talents and potential. At our school, we believe it is our responsibility to nurture those abilities so that every student is challenged, supported and inspired to achieve their personal best.

High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) recognises that students may demonstrate advanced potential across a range of domains - intellectual, creative, social-emotional and physical. Importantly, high potential exists in every classroom. It is not limited to a small group of students, nor is it defined solely by high marks.

HPGE is about growth and challenge. It focuses on identifying students’ strengths and ensuring they are provided with opportunities to extend, deepen and apply their learning in meaningful ways. Potential can emerge at different times and in different contexts, which is why teachers use a range of evidence, including assessment data, classroom observation and student voice, to inform their decisions.

In our classrooms, differentiation is key. Teachers adjust the level of challenge through open-ended tasks, higher-order questioning, flexible grouping and critical and creative thinking. This ensures all students are appropriately challenged and supported to achieve their personal best.

By nurturing potential early and consistently, we create learning environments where every student is encouraged to stretch, grow and thrive.

At The Oaks PS:

We identify high potential and gifted learners through data and assessment, then support them with differentiated classroom programs, targeted enrichment and extracurricular opportunities, and, where appropriate, acceleration or advanced learning pathways. We work closely with families and the wider community to nurture each student’s talent and regularly review our programs to ensure they continue to meet their needs.Their potential may be demonstrated in one or more of the following domains:

  • Intellectual – reasoning, understanding, and problem-solving
  • Creative – originality, imagination, and innovation
  • Social-emotional – leadership, empathy, and collaboration
  • Physical – athleticism, coordination, and motor skills

In our classroom
At The Oaks Public School, learning is a vibrant and purposeful experience designed to engage every student. Our classrooms offer rich opportunities through a variety of hands-on activities, projects, and real-world connections that make learning meaningful and relevant. Teachers hold high expectations for all students, encouraging them to set personal goals and strive for excellence in their work. Through explicit teaching, educators clearly model and explain new concepts and skills, ensuring students understand the learning intentions and success criteria. Challenging tasks are thoughtfully designed to stretch students’ thinking, promote problem-solving skills, and deepen their understanding across all subject areas. We create a supportive learning environment where students feel safe, respected, and encouraged to express their ideas and ask questions. This nurturing atmosphere helps build confidence and resilience, allowing students to embrace challenges with enthusiasm. Central to our approach is the development of critical and creative thinking skills; students are taught to analyse information, think independently, and generate innovative solutions. Through this holistic approach, we prepare our students not only academically but also as thoughtful, adaptable learners ready to succeed in an ever-changing world.
Across our school
We offer a wide range of co-curricular opportunities at our school.
Across NSW

The Representative School Sport Pathway and PSSA events enable our students to trial and compete in sports at regional, state and national levels, fostering discipline, commitment and collaboration.

A range of exciting programs are offered by the NSW Arts Unit. Our students have the chance to be involved in combined school musicals, showcasing their talents through vibrant performances. We also engage in dynamic dance workshops, including Aboriginal dance sessions that celebrate and deepen understanding of Indigenous culture. These enriching experiences foster creativity, cultural appreciation, and confidence, allowing our students to grow as artistic performers and respectful contributors to our diverse community.

Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of Premier’s Challenges that inspire excellence and build skills across key areas. Our students take part in debating competitions to develop their public speaking and critical thinking, reading challenges that foster a love of literature and literacy, sporting events that promote teamwork and physical fitness, and spelling competitions that enhance vocabulary and language skills. These challenges provide meaningful opportunities for growth, achievement, and confidence-building in a supportive environment.
